Technique
- Take the bar from a rack at chest height, resting it on the front of the shoulders with a grip just wider than shoulder width.
- Stand with feet about hip-width, elbows slightly forward of the bar.
- Dip a few inches by bending the knees, torso upright and heels down.
- Explosively extend the legs and hips and press the bar overhead as it leaves the shoulders.
- Lock out overhead with the bar over the middle of your foot, then lower it to the shoulders and reset.
Cues
- Dip straight down and drive straight up; think of jumping the bar upward.
- Finish the press only after the legs have extended.
- Brace the abs throughout and keep the ribs down.
Common mistakes
- Dipping too deep or letting the knees cave in.
- Pressing the bar out in front instead of up.
- Leaning back at lockout.
- Not resetting the stance between reps, which makes the dip inconsistent.
