Technique
- Lie on a flat bench holding a light barbell on your thighs with a shoulder-width overhand grip.
- With arms almost straight, raise the bar up until it is over your chest.
- Keep moving in the same arc and lower the bar behind your head until your upper arms are beside your ears.
- Pull the bar back over the chest along the same path, then lower it to the thighs.
- Repeat the full arc for the planned reps.
Cues
- Use a much lighter bar than for presses; this is a long-lever movement.
- Keep a small, fixed bend in the elbows the whole time.
- Keep the ribs down so the lower back stays on the bench.
Common mistakes
- Bending the elbows more and more until it becomes a press.
- Letting the bar drop fast behind the head.
- Arching the back to gain range at the overhead end.
