Technique
- Hold a dumbbell in one hand and a fixed support, such as a rack upright or pole, with the other, standing with feet close together.
- Lean your body away from the support so the arm with the dumbbell hangs out from your side.
- Raise the dumbbell out to the side until the arm is about shoulder height, elbow slightly bent.
- Pause, then lower slowly to the start.
Cues
- Lean from the ankles with a straight body.
- Lead with the elbow and keep the shoulder down.
- Use a light dumbbell to feel the tension at the bottom of the lift.
Common mistakes
- Bending at the waist rather than leaning the whole body.
- Swinging the weight up.
- Shrugging the working shoulder.
- Letting go of the support as you lift.
