Technique
- Stand tall with light dumbbells at your sides, thumbs pointing forward.
- Angle the arms about 30 degrees in front of your body, between a front and a side raise.
- Raise the arms on that line with thumbs up until they reach shoulder height.
- Lower slowly to the start.
Cues
- Keep the thumbs pointing up the whole time.
- Move only within a range that feels comfortable for the shoulder.
- Keep the shoulders down away from the ears.
Common mistakes
- Turning the thumbs down, which narrows the space in the shoulder joint.
- Using weights heavy enough to need a body swing.
- Shrugging as the arms rise.
