Technique
- Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, palms facing in and a slight bend in the elbows.
- Raise one arm out to the side until it is about shoulder height.
- Lower it slowly as you begin raising the other arm.
- Keep alternating sides for the planned number of reps.
Cues
- Lead with the elbow rather than the hand.
- Keep the torso still while the arms alternate.
- Stop at shoulder height.
Common mistakes
- Swinging the body to get the dumbbell up.
- Shrugging the shoulders.
- Raising the arm higher than shoulder level.
- Dropping the dumbbell quickly instead of controlling it.
