Technique
- Stand with feet hip-width apart and brace your abs.
- Hold one dumbbell in one hand and press it straight overhead.
- Keep the upper arm beside your ear and bend the elbow, lowering the weight behind your head.
- Stop when you feel a deep stretch in the back of the arm.
- Straighten the arm to raise the dumbbell back overhead; switch arms after the set.
Cues
- Point the elbow up, not out to the side.
- Keep the ribs down and the glutes tight.
- Hold the working elbow with the free hand if it wanders.
Common mistakes
- Letting the elbow flare out.
- Arching the lower back to push the weight up.
- Lowering so fast that the dumbbell hits the head or neck.
