## Equipment

- Dumbbells

## Technique

1. Hold a dumbbell in one hand and a fixed support, such as a rack upright or pole, with the other, standing with feet close together.
2. Lean your body away from the support so the arm with the dumbbell hangs out from your side.
3. Raise the dumbbell out to the side until the arm is about shoulder height, elbow slightly bent.
4. Pause, then lower slowly to the start.

### Cues

- Lean from the ankles with a straight body.
- Lead with the elbow and keep the shoulder down.
- Use a light dumbbell to feel the tension at the bottom of the lift.

### Common mistakes

- Bending at the waist rather than leaning the whole body.
- Swinging the weight up.
- Shrugging the working shoulder.
- Letting go of the support as you lift.
